There is nothing unordinary about teeth whitening after care. Here are some teeth whitening after care tips every patient should consider to ensure a long-lasting improved smile.

Brush Properly

The first step after teeth whitening is making sure your smile is cared for properly by brushing throughout the day. Brushing in the morning and night is no longer enough. Everyone should brush their teeth 15 minutes after every meal. The foods and beverages we consume can stain our teeth the longer we wait to brush, especially with wine and coffee, so brushing throughout the day will avoid discoloration.

Use Whitening Toothpastes

Whitening toothpastes consist of low bleaching ingredients that help prevent break down stains from discoloring your teeth.

Reduce or Eliminate Alcohol and Smoking

Frequently drinking alcohol and smoking reverses teeth whitening agents from brightening your smile. Nicotine and alcohol contain tannins that can stain teeth, especially mixed drinks with soda. Those who cannot quit these unhealthy habits should consider doing these moderately and less frequently to avoid stains, as well as brushing more often.

Touch-Up Treatments for Continued Results

Depending on the whitening method patients and their dentists use, people can continue whitening their teeth with touch-up treatments. Generally, dentists recommend touch-ups every six months after a year or so. Frequent consumption of staining foods can require touch-ups more often.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, teeth whitening is not a permanent teeth whitener, but avoiding food sources that stain teeth can help prolong the need for touch-ups as much as a year after treatment. Depending on how well the patient takes care of their teeth after whitening can ensure long-lasting effects with healthy habits and regular maintenance.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into a patients’ jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, injury or some other reason. They are a permanent solution that look and feel natural, like ones’ own teeth. With dental implants, the mouth is restored as closely as possible to its natural state. By replacing the entire tooth, including the root, it is possible to replicate the function of natural teeth, with a strong and stable foundation that enables comfortable biting and chewing.

Dental implants also preserve the integrity of facial structures, preventing bone resorption that would otherwise take place with the loss of teeth, and the facial structures remain intact. With implant supported replacement teeth, ones’ smile appears more natural. Also, when using dental implants, adjacent teeth are not compromised to replace the missing ones. The overall quality of life is greatly enhanced with replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. It is much easier to care for an implant supported crown, which can be cleaned like natural tooth. As a result of improved appearance, function, comfort and health, the self-esteem and confidence of many people using dental implants is restored.

Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way from its traditional tasks of teeth replacement and restoration. Now it can provide many improved facilities which effectively deal with all dental issues. Current lifestyle choices expose people to a variety of substances that can lead to discoloration and tooth decay. Things such as smoking, alcohol, tea and coffee are among those that normally lead to teeth staining. Discoloration may also take place as a result of medication. This is where teeth whitening treatments are very effective.

Gum Disease: More People Struggle With it Than You Think

Dentistry has come a long way in the tools we use to treat everything from simple cavities to replacing teeth. Even with all the awareness about our oral health, problems still persist. A recently published report from the Journal of Dental Research found that 47% of the U.S. population over 30 years of age has Periodontitis. The study also found that 64 percent of adults 65 and older had either moderate or severe Periodontitis.

Periodontitis, also known as Gum Disease, is caused by food and bacterial build up under the gums leading to inflammation, bleeding and bone loss around the teeth. Next time you have your hygiene evaluation, listen closely to the numbers the hygienist is calling out to be recorded. These numbers are measured in millimeters and they tell us how far down the bone level and gum attachment is. Any numbers above 3 mm with bleeding can mean infection and gum disease.

The treatment for mild to moderate gum disease is Scaling and Root Planning, also known as a “Deep Cleaning.” In moderate to severe gum disease, the pockets are so deep that our instruments cannot get to the bottom of the sulcus or pocket. Traditionally, Periodontal surgery was required to treat these forms of gum disease. With mechanical incisions and debridement, flap surgery, and needing sutures placed for 2 weeks afterwards, the healing process is generally uncomfortable.

As we strive to provide our patients with the most up to date equipment and effective treatment, we have been treating Gum Disease with the LANAP protocol. LANAP, or laser-assisted new attachment procedure, uses a Periolase Laser to create micro flaps, debris disease and infected areas, and creates hemostasis. The laser is very selective by leaving healthy tissue alone. Since sutures are not required post-operative pain is reduced greatly. We have also found that gingival pockets have been reduced without the usual recession of the gums after Periodontal surgery.

Chances are that you or someone you know is affected by gum disease. There are many treatment possibilities and outcomes available to help with this disease. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns regarding Gum Disease or your oral health.

Sincerely, Drs. Alan and Yoni Howard and the Dental Office Encino
